- Additional information
Broderick Smith came to Australia in the 1950’s as a Ten Pound Pom and grew up in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
These are his life stories. They explore his early musical experiences in Melbourne (Adderley Smith Blues Band), look at his National Service experience – he liked the army but hated the war (Vietnam). After the army he sang with the legendary Carson. Then together with Kerryn Tolhurst formed the pioneering Dingoes, the group that combined rhythm & blues with bush music to develop a unique Australian country rock sound – their many classic tunes include ‘Boy on the Run’ ‘Way Out West’ and ‘Smooth Sailing’. The Dingoes toured relentlessly across Australia and the USA before disintegrating and not achieving the levels of success that many predicted. Beyond the Dingoes, there was Broderick Smith’s Big Combo (the classic hit single ‘Faded Roses’) and much more.
In 2009, Brod was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame for his work with the Dingoes. Following this in 2010, the band reformed, recorded a new album in Tucson Arizona and undertook a successful national tour.
Broderick has also worked with such legendary artists as Buffy St Marie, Joe Cocker and Cat Stevens. He is a true survivor and continues to perform and record new music. His new album Man Out Of Time will be released alongside his autobiography in late August 2018.
Broderick Smith is an Australian soul man. From Carson through The Dingoes, Big
Combo and a myriad of projects under his own name, real soul, passion and engagement
have been his trademarks. Ranging through blues, country, rock‘n’roll, pure soul his is
simply one of the finest white country, blues and soul voices this country has produced.
Broderick can do no wrong. (STUART COUPE)
I think it is important that we all acknowledge that The Dingoes were the founding
fathers of our most important subculture which came to be known as Oz Rock.
Brod is a legend and his voice has never palled, is still fresh on the old songs as well as
new, and he still makes me melt. (CLINTON WALKER)
